You have been many to take part in the training in France and we thank you for that!
Initially planned over three mornings on the 25th of March, the 1st and 8th of April 2020, the lockdown context led to us to reshape the training and make it online. Hence, six sessions of two hours took place between the 25th of march and the 20th of May.
The goal of the training is to strengthen the capacities of education professionals to insure continuous and non-discriminatory education to students living in slums or in accommodation structures and/or in migratory situation – a particular attention is given to Roma students on the move. To do so, the training aims to facilitate dialogue and collaboration between different actors involved in the support of the students and their families. Each participant is expected to disseminate the tools acquired to ten other professionals.
About thirty people coming from the education and social sectors got involved in the training: teachers in ordinary classes, for allophone students (UPE2A) or for students with handicap (ULIS); academic counsellors; schools directors; mediators; social workers; head of department in the social sector.
Each session aimed at bringing a better understanding of the fields of action and means of intervention of the different actors involved with the students and to facilitate the share of practices. The program was thus split in six sessions:
1) Introduction and presentation of the “Misto Avilean!” project, goal of the platform and subscription means;
2) Presentation of CASNAV (Academic centre for the schooling of newly arrived students and students from Traveller and travelling families) by Jennifer Lovato and Virginie George;
3) Presentation of multiple services of social support and accommodation structures:
- Julien Chatelain presented the Gypsy and Travellers Direction (DTV at Sauvegarde du Nord association);
- David Ahmed-Affandi and Fouzia Djouadi introduced the Villages of Insertion (Afeji);
- Aurélie Dellys presented the emergency housing service (SHU - Afeji);
- Sabine Hasbrouck introduced the Accommodation service (Afeji).
4) The diversity of the families’ trajectories was highlighted through an online film-debate! We watched Olivier Pagani’s movie called Romani Street View (2016) and then discussed it together;
5) Exchange of practices: this time Olivier Pagani came to talk about his activities as a teacher for allophone students, then Pierre Boisseleau introduced the mobile schooling system;
6) In the last session, which was postponed to the 20th of May, we focused more on the news related to the end of lockdown and coming back to schools (in France, this process began on the 11th of May). Each participant was invited to present the situation in his/her institution and to share experience and practices with other participants.
The online format allowed us to reach a high attendance number that encouraged participation and dialogue. The participants’ implication, them attending every week, was a source of motivation and made us eager to keep on adapting and put forward activities which can assist each one’s professional practice in the support of students encountering difficulties.
